Irene Moore Davis

On Thursday, April 10, Irene Moore Davis, will be honoured by the University of Windsor as a recipient of an Alumni Award of Excellence in the Alumni Award of Merit category. Here is the citation found on the Alumni Association website:

Irene Moore Davis is currently Assistant Curator at the Amherstburg Freedom Museum. She is an educator, historian, writer, podcaster, and community advocate who speaks and writes frequently about equity, diversity, inclusion, and African Canadian history. She is a graduate of the University of Windsor, Western University, and Queen’s University and a retired college administrator who continues to teach courses in Black history and equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Irene’s published work has included poetry, history, and journalism. As an avid historian, Irene Moore Davis has greatly contributed to the recording of the history of the Windsor/Essex area and her work on Canadian Black settlements is included in 2016 book Fluid Frontier: Slavery, Resistance, And The Underground Railroad In The Detroit River Borderland. Her documentary producer credits have included the award-winning The North Was Our Canaan (2020) and Across the River to Freedom (2023.) She was featured in the 2022 Discovery Channel mini-series Secrets of the Underground Railroad and the 2023 CBC series Black Life: A Canadian History.

Irene fulfills community roles including President of the Essex County Black Historical Research Society, co-host of the All Write in Sin City podcast, co-founder of Black Women of Forward Action, member of the board of Canterbury College, and member of the University of Windsor Board of Governors. She serves on national committees of the Anglican Church of Canada. A member of the Jackson Park Bandshell Ad Hoc committee. In 2022, Irene was the recipient of the Harriet Tubman Award for Commitment to a Purpose from the Ontario Black History Society and was named to the 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women. In 2025, Irene received the King Charles III Coronation Medal for her contributions to Canada. Irene resides in Windsor, Ontario, with her husband,

Grassroots community organization, Coalition for Justice, Unity, Equity (CJUE), celebrates Black History Month with a video submission of its Youth in Action Club members performing Maya Angelou’s renowned poem, “Still I Rise.”

CJUE strives to promote equality, respect, and understanding amongst all members of the Windsor community by advocating for racialized peoples, particularly of African descent, facing social and human rights roadblocks. Located in Windsor’s west end, CJUE is a conduit of hope and a safe space for young people of all race, creed, and colour.

CJUE’s Founder Joi E. Hurst comments “Still I Rise is an important piece that our community holds dear to our hearts. When participating in the University of Windsor’s Black History Month celebration, our youth members knew that they wanted to perform a poem that would leave a significant impact. I am very proud.”

This season we are over our budget after this seasons funding of G1 License for our teens, After-school Meals/Activities and some Warm Winter Wear although more is needed.
We are asking for donations of toys/gifts for all aged students. Giftcards for groceries to create dinner baskets for our families, warm jackets/sweat shirts for boys and girls etc.
All donations can be private or anonymous. Even if it's a couple of small stocking Stuffers for their stockings🎁🎄
All is greatly appreciated.

KIDPRENEURSHIP

Kids with entrepreneurial dreams can get their start (with an adult's help) before they've even hit middle school. Selling homemade crafts, art, babysitting services, gardening, can be great business ideas for kids. It's a fun and creative way for them to learn about entrepreneurship, while helping them earn extra money. Kidprenuership Workshop ends with a pop-up vendors event where they use their learned business skills, to sell all their goods created during Workshop.

LIFE SKILLS

Important life skills students need to know, and practice include, decision-making, problem-solving, personal hygiene, meal prep, communication/interpersonal skills, time management, budgeting/finances, mentoring individual/group sessions, plus more.

G1 LICENSE WORKSHOP

The "Ontario G1 Written Test” workshop will provide the necessary information in gaining your 1st level of becoming a licensed driver. Our classroom setting, 1x per week with skilled mentors along with Police interaction teaching road safety rules. Mock Tests in class and to study at home are include with the workshop. 4-week workshop followed by a scheduled day of testing. All fees and materials are included with our free workshop. Refreshments available in each class. Students are required to attend all 4 days of workshop.

POST-SECONDARY PREP

Post-Secondary Education can be one of the highest forms of educational standing. Our Workshop mentors introduces all participants to the many higher educational opportunities with each student group visiting Colleges and universities. Scheduled leaders and professionals visit each workshop bringing a plethora of knowledge and information. A hands-on approach makes their educational dreams become a real possibility.
